It was a one-point game during the final 2:42 of the stanza, and as time expired on the first-half clock, Richard Stockton’s Mario Lancioni banked a jumper, sending the Ospreys into the locker room ahead, 31-30.

Richard Stockton maintained the lead until the 3:55 mark of the second half. Immaculata got within two points five times, but each time the Ospreys held the visitors at bay. The Mighty Macs pushed their lead to four, 68-64, with 2:33 left to play but the Ospreys cut their deficit to 68-67 after a three-point play by Omar Smith. Dan Lepone drained a pull-up jumper with 1:46 remaining, putting Immaculata back ahead by three.

Richard Stockton’s Santini Lancioni sunk a three pointer with 53.1 seconds left in regulation and the score with stay that way when the clock hit zero.

8:00 p.m. No. 4 Gwynedd-Mercy 70, No. 5 Alvernia 68
GWYNEDD VALLEY, PA. – Gwynedd-Mercy hung on to defeat Alvernia, 70-68, Wednesday night in a first-round game of the 2008 ECAC South Region Tournament.

Juniors Tim McCauley (Philadelphia, Pa./Father Judge) and Ryan McCarty (Cape May Court House, N.J./Middle Twp.) each had 12 points for the Griffins (20-9) who defeated the conference rival Crusaders (16-11) for the third time in four games this season.

Gwynedd will now play at top-seeded Albright, who were 79-75 winners over Dickinson, in a semifinal game in Reading at 4 p.m. on Saturday.

Matt Johnson (Philadelphia, Pa./Strawberry Mansion) added 11 points but the sophomore scored five-straight points in a crucial stretch with under a minute in the game as the seesaw contest saw 15 of the 16 lead changes coming in the second half.

Washington’s three-pointer in the first-half help erased a six-point deficit to keep a Crusader lead for most of the stanza. The Griffins whittled the hole down to tie it at 30-30 before Alvernia would take a 32-31 lead at the break.

The teams stayed neck and neck throughout the second half as neither team led by as much as five. Bradley’s offensive rebound and putback from a missed free throw gave the Crusaders a 47-42 lead with 12 minutes in the contest.

After Johnson hit from downtown with 45 ticks left for a four-point lead, King answered with a longball for a 67-66 GM lead. Johnson would then hit two from the line followed by two free-throws from Bradley for a 69-68 Griffin edge with 10 seconds. Wroten would hit the first of two after being fouled, but the second rolled out to Charlie Hughes who had a decent look at a three-pointer but couldn’t get it to fall.

King, Terrence Shawell, and David Washington each scored 15 points for Alvernia. Bradley added 14 points and a game-high 16 boards, including 12 offensive caroms.

Wroten chipped in 11 points while Johnson and McCarty each had seven rebounds apiece.

2008 PAC Men's Basketball Championship

PAC Championship
Friday, February 29, 2008
7:00 p.m. #2 Immaculata 85, #4 Gwynedd-Mercy 68
IMMACULATA, Pa. – Jayson Hyman scored 16 points and grabbed 13 rebounds, earning the tournament’s most valuable player award, as Immaculata stamped its ticket to the NCAA Division III Men’s Basketball Tournament with an 85-68 victory over visiting Gwynedd-Mercy before a season-high sellout crowd of 660 in the championship game of the Pennsylvania Athletic Conference tournament Friday night at Alumnae Hall.

With the win, Immaculata (18-9) claims the PAC’s automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. Gwynedd-Mercy (19-9) saw its season come to an end with the loss.

Kyle Finklea tallied 15 points and Sean Fordham 14, lifting the Mighty Macs to their first conference championship in just the third year of the program.

“It is something that is very hard to explain,” said third-year head coach Jamie Chadwin. “I am excited for everyone that is a part of this program. I was happy we were able to execute the game plan and play so well.”

The Macs went on a 10-0 run with 5:49 remaining in the game to sew up its first trip to the NCAA Tournament. Gwynedd-Mercy’s Dave Smith knocked down a jumper to draw the Griffins within three (67-64). However, Immaculata answered by holding its guests scoreless over the next four minutes to open up its first double-digit lead of the game, 77-64.

That burst late in the game broke open an affair that was very much a see-saw battle for most of the contest. The Macs’ Julius Lopez (five points) sent the home team into the locker room at halftime with a 46-41 advantage by nailing 3-pointer off the glass from 22 feet away at the buzzer. It was Lopez’s first shot attempt of the contest as he had just checked into the game with four seconds remaining.

That 3-ball ended one of the highest scoring halves of the season, which saw Gwynedd-Mercy shoot 53 percent from the field (16-for-30) while Immaculata shot 46 percent (18-for-39). The Griffins cooled off in the second frame, but the Macs maintained its hot hand to outlast its visitors.

Gwynedd-Mercy tied the contest at 48-all at the 17:42 mark, but that was the last time the tilt was knotted up. The Griffins pulled to within one (52-51) with 14:19 to go on a 3-pointer by Matt Johnson. But Dan Lepone answered with a trey of his own and tacked on a jumper shortly after to push the Macs out in front 57-51.

The Griffins would not get any closer than two the rest of the way.

Fordham added five assists to his 14-point effort, and Finklea four helpers. Hyman grabbed 10 defensive boards as Immaculata out-rebounded Gwynedd-Mercy by a 47-36 margin.

The win also delivered Immaculata University its first PAC team championship in any sport.

Dave Smith scored a game-high 17 points for the Griffins in the loss. Lemeire Talley scored 15.

The Crusaders (16-10) gave it one lash push, getting within 64-62 with just over two minutes left but Gwynedd put the game away scoring the next six points. Two Dan Delconte (Blue Bell, Pa./Wissahickon) made it a 70-62 lead with 46 ticks on the clock.

Finklea led all scorers at the half with 13 points, while Lepone added eight points.

Misericordia came out and scored the first bucket of the second half at the 18:36 mark, cutting the Cougars deficit to seven. The Mighty Macs responded with a 12-4, ignited by a three-pointer by Finklea at the 17:47 mark and capped by another Finklea trey five and a half minutes later. Immaculata maintained a double-figure lead the remainder of the way.

The Mighty Macs took their largest lead of the contest, 68-51, with 3:56 remaining, and the score would end with the same margin.

Finklea finished with a game-high 22 points on 5-of-7 shooting from three-point range to go along with seven rebounds and four steals. Lepone contributed 15 points, including 6-8 from the foul line. Martson reached double figures with 13 points and led Immaculata on the glass with eight rebounds.

Saturday, February 23, 2008
2:00 p.m. #3 Misericordia 58, #6 Neumann 38
Dallas, Pa. -- The Misericordia University men's basketball team turned in a superior defensive effort on their way to a 58-38 win over Neumann in the first round of the Pennsylvania Athletic Conference playoffs, Saturday afternoon in the Anderson Center.

But, the story of the game was the Misericordia defense as the Cougars held Neumann to 28.6% shooting from the floor (14-49), including 25.9% in the second half.

Both teams struggled offensively throughout the first half and Neumann made a late surge to take a 20-18 halftime lead.
